Understand Prep mode vs Expo mode

Prep mode and its key features

Prep Mode is typically used by kitchen staff who are responsible for preparing specific items in an order. In this mode, users can only manage the preparation status of orders or individual items.

Key features of Prep Mode:

  • Two statuses available: Open and Completed

  • Users can mark either:

    • A full order as completed

    • Individual items within an order as completed

  • Designed for back-of-house staff focused on food preparation

  • Does not allow marking items as "Served"

Prep mode helps streamline the cooking process and ensures that staff can clearly see which items still need to be prepared.

Expo mode and its key features

Expo Mode is designed for the expeditor , also known as the "kitchen runner" or "expo person." This role is usually responsible for overseeing the flow of all orders from preparation to delivery. The expeditor ensures that all items are ready, correctly assembled, and sent out on time.

Key features of Expo Mode:

  • Three statuses available: Open, Completed, and Served

  • Users can:

    • Mark items or orders as completed (like in Prep Mode)

    • Mark items or orders as served (ready to go to the customer)

  • Allows real-time monitoring and management of all kitchen orders

  • Helps maintain service timing and coordination between kitchen and front-of-house staff

Expo Mode gives the expeditor full visibility and control over the final stages of order fulfillment.
